Racism is a major issue in the United States, and it has been the norm even before the country attained independence. The messages about the founding of the United States are referred to as stories that emerged with popular culture that race was a unifying factor of national identity (Media, n.d). Race was a frequent topic in major magazines. The publishers of these stories consisted of established scientists, people from the House of Representatives, and other renowned people. The stories were accepted since it was assumed that they were written by people who know the subject. An example of such a story is a publication released in 1898 after the United States took possession of the Philippines, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Guam after defeating Spain in the war. The poem was in McClure’s magazine and was titled “The White Man’s Burden,” which emphasized that America was a world superpower (Media, n.d). The poem was a rallying call for racial justification and the creation of an empire by asking American troops to defeat the Filipino rebels trying to fight for independence for their country.
The documentary presents several stories about the social and biological “trusts” of race that supported racial discrimination. In most cases, the story suggests that the Caucasian race is superior to other races. The scientific view is that the Caucasians are not taking over Mexican lands since they are greedy for land, and they did not enslave blacks due to selfishness or harming Indians for the love of violence. Instead, the real reason behind these events is that is Caucasian race is superior, and it is inevitable scientifically that they would dominate all other races (Media, n.d). The first example is the Dred Scott case of 1857, whereby the Supreme Court determined that blacks will never be United States citizens since they had no rights, and the Caucasians were expected to respect this fact.
