Culture in both organizations and society refers to the values, practices, and expectations that guide and give bearing on how their respective members ought to act in their day-to-day interactions. Culture must be formulated in a manner that encourages cohesion as opposed to a way that can lead crisis. As noted by Littlejohn and Oetzel (2017), organizational culture revolves around five main areas: narrative reproduction, textual reproduction, power and politics, technology, and symbolic performances. These areas from the organization are comparable to aspects of society to a great extent.
Narrative reproduction emphasizes the importance of storytelling with the intent of helping the organization appear sensible. It also plays an instrumental role in instilling the core values of the organization. According to Forman (2013), storytelling is a management tool that helps businesses to develop, thrive and strengthen their cultures. In society, storytelling is usually used as a means of passing down cultural practices from one generation to another.
Textual reproduction entails the recorded aspect of organizational culture which includes websites, email messages, and mission statements whose main aim is to express how the management perceives culture (Littlejohn & Oetzel, 2017)). This is a way of passing information from one person to another and it must be done efficiently to ensure that the right information gets to the right person at the right time. If information is not transmitted in the right way, then things might fall apart (Koschmann, 2012). In society, perhaps aspects that come close to textual reproduction are social media messages, books shared among friends, and messages exchanged within a community or a group.
