Global Leadership Attributes

In 2004, Robert House led a group of 160 researchers to explore the effect of culture on leadership effectiveness (House, Hanges, Javidan, Dorfman, & Gupta, 2004). The GLOBE (Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness) Studies gathered data from 17,000 people representing 62 countries. Expanding on Hofstede's approach, the GLOBE study profiled countries in terms of nine cultural dimensions, grouped countries into ten regional clusters with similar cultures, and profiled each cluster in terms of the six global leadership behaviors or styles.
As shown in the figure below, the GLOBE study identified twenty-two positive universal leadership attributes and eight negative universal leadership attributes associated with leadership effectiveness or the lack thereof.

Analyzing a Leader’s Effectiveness with Establishing a Constructive Climate
Select a leader of a group in a workplace, volunteer organization, or class. Use a fictitious name to protect the identity of the leader.

f. Addressing inadequate performance: Based on best practices explored in this lesson, provide an example to illustrate how the leader addressed or should have addressed inadequate performance by 1 or more group members.
