Lesson Preparation
The focus was for students to understand cell division and to differentiate the two cell processes – mitosis and meiosis. The goal was for each student to learn and know every stage that takes place in mitosis and meiosis. In addition to this, the students will have hands-on experience by engaging in activities, comparing and contrasting the processes involved in cell division (Echevarría, 2009).
Building Background
The lesson is a continuation of the chapter about cells. From the previous lesson, the students learned about prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Students have also identified and described the critical organelles and its functions found in plants and animals. Moreover, students also learned about the nucleus and chromosome that contains the DNA of a living thing (, 2007).
Comprehensible Input
The goal is to group ELL students with bilingual students in a 1:2 ratio. At the same time, ELL students will be provided with visual representations, not just instructions to accommodate their needs. The purpose is to allow the students to have a better understanding of cell division and its phases by working in groups. ELL students will be able to comprehend and also understand the lesson’s key concepts better with a bilingual student in the group (Echevarría, 2009).
Strategies
Group discussion about cell division will be beneficial with each student contributing to the topic. Grouped with bilinguals, ELLs will be able to express themselves more to improve their comprehension. To reinforce learning and have a better grasp, illustration cards of cell division stages and its description will be provided to the group (, 2007).
