One of the key takeaways from these videos for me was that there is a distinction between management and leadership. Management is about getting stuff done - the day-to-day activities that allow tactical tasks to be completed. Leadership, on the other hand, is about people. It's less about what you do and more about who you are. It's how you conduct yourself in front of your peers. It's the capacity to cope with people. When we are constantly focusing on the tactical, we have much less time to care about the people who makes all those strategic things occur - what deadlines to meet, what KPIs to achieve, what projects to ship. Leaders aren't responsible for the outcomes, as Simon points out. Leaders are in charge of the people who are in charge of the outcomes. And without our people's backing, we feel compelled to take on greater tactical responsibility because we know it's our butts on the line. What if we spent more time leading and developing connections with our employees so that we could trust them and they could trust us? Then we might delegate tactical accountability to them, allowing us to focus on what we do best as leaders: looking forward and planning for the long term. "It's far tougher than management, and it needs a lot more work and studying, which is why leadership is such a difficult talent to master, and exceptional leaders put in a lot of effort.”
