Social inequality, both on a micro and macro level, perpetuates child abuse. At the micro-level, various factors are responsible for the high cases of child abuse. Poverty is a significant factor that leads to the issue. This is a situation where families or individuals in the population lack sufficient resources to take part in activities, have the same type of diet, amenities, and living conditions as the rest of society. The link between neglect, poverty, and child abuse have been contentious topics. In many instances, children from poor backgrounds are often exposed to a wide array of issues. If the parents or guardians are poor, then the child can easily be abused or neglected. These children often undergo various types of problems such as sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional or psychological abuse, and neglect (Bullinger et al. 2019). On the macro level, several problems, such as lack of legislation and programs to protect such children, has meant that they continue to suffer (Schwartz-Kenney et al. 2001). A large number of street families exist due to a lack of collaborative efforts to reach out to needy families and help such children. Young children need assistance, and if they do not get any, then the issues of child abuse are worsened.
Child abuse is influenced by individual and institutional discrimination. Individual discrimination entails a situation whereby a person is discriminated based on their race, gender, or economic background. Child abuse arises due to individual discrimination. The disparities that occur due to social inequality are a determinant of child abuse. For example, if a child is black, they can easily undergo child abuse. The occurrence of abuse in some families can be understood based on the ecological model. This model suggests that several factors, such as the child’s characteristics and their family, can lead to abuse (Leite et al. 2009). Since a child is young, they can often undergo physical abuse, especially when they are under the age of 10 years. Institutional discrimination arises where the child’s needs are not considered by an agency or an entity that is responsible for caring for the needs of children.
