Question: Although early evolutionary models emphasized harmonious cooperation within members of the family, recent evolutionary models point to three important arenas of conflict: sibling conflict, parent–offspring conflict, and conflict between mother and father. Although inclusive fitness theory predicts that genetic relatedness will be an important predictor of altruism, family members almost never have identical genetic interests. As a consequence, conflict and competition within families are predicted to be pervasive.
