Introduction
Now that the question of legalizing marijuana in the USA is receiving considerable public and legislative attention, the focus has shifted towards usage of marijuana in medicine. Marijuana is one drug that is used in some states that have been able to legalize certain levels of its usage, and some think that legalizing it would be of medical benefit (Mickey Martin, 2011). There is an argument as to whether to use the drug in medical treatments or not. I believe that Marijuana should not be for medical purposes and further be legalized. The cons of medical marijuana outscore the pros.
There are considerable reasons that make Marijuana an unhealthy drug. Apparently, Marijuana is a very dangerous drug to use and is not approved by the Federal Drugs Agency. The approach on medical marijuana is not a legal but rather a healthy issue and health wise it is not recommended for anybody to smoke. Marijuana is an addictive drug, interferes with fertility, and injures the immune system, lungs, and brain; therefore, it brings more harm to the body than benefits (Procorn.org, 2016). Secondly, for its use in the treatment of nausea or HIV wasting, there is an alternative available in the form of Marinol. In the 21st century, medical practice and science are aimed at promoting drugs that are in fact useful to patients rather than promoting smoking an illegal plant as a reprieve. It is important to encourage patients to use evidence-based medicine like Marinol in treatment as it will be double standards. Real drugs should be used rather than using illegal drugs. Even in the use of Marijuana, various marijuana researches has raised more concerns about the drug than answers as there is an increased serious harm to patients that contravening in reducing it (Procorn.org, 2016). Today legislated marijuana prescriptions have circumvented basic drug safety standards lacking a standard of care. In the long term, prescribing marijuana to patients with chronic illnesses would cause increased health complications and harm.
Proponents have argued that the drug it safe and efficient in the treatment AIDS, pain, glaucoma, cancer, epilepsy and many other conditions. Many doctors and medical practitioners have experienced firsthand the benefits of marijuana in treatment as it is less toxic and affordable to patients contrast to other conventional medicines that are prescribed for different syndromes or symptoms. There are documented cases; government-sanctioned scientific research and verifiable data from credible organizations which have concluded that marijuana is essential in treatment. It is commonly known for debilitating patient fatigue, restoring appetite, reduce weight loss and cure vomiting (Procorn.org, 2016). Also, other researchers have indicated that marijuana is even less toxic than common pharmaceutical drugs and can be helpful towards certain patients including with chronic muscle spasticity, tractable nausea and wasting syndrome.
