Responsibility of Christians with Regard to Communism and Capitalism and the Mandates of the Gospel
The concepts of communism and capitalism in Christianity have raised controversy, with a section of believers arguing against communism because it denies the existence of anything beyond the material realm and the presence of moral truth. Worst of all, this philosophical ideology denies the fundamental quality of humanity: the freedom of the individual soul (Boer, 2018). The assigned video on the Cold War in context creates an excellent opportunity to understand the relationship between capitalism and communism and define Christians’ responsibility based on these ideas.
After viewing the video, two primary arguments regarding the responsibility of Christians based on communism and capitalism came to mind. The first argument is that Christians have a primary role in promoting equality because everyone was created in the image and likeness of God. Communism creates equality on a level not offered by capitalism. A communist regime treats citizens equally regardless of education, social class, and other demographic factors (Boer, 2018). The Bible advocates for equality in many aspects, maintaining that all life is valuable and worthy. As seen in Genesis 3:16, before sin, even men and women were equal. All socially constructed distinctions do not exist in God’s eyes. Christians, therefore, are responsible for advocating for equality in society according to the lessons from communism.
