There is a huge amount of money in politics today. Candidates strive to raise money to fund their campaign either from the public or through private means such as donation from wealthy individuals. Congressional candidates are likely to win if they happen to spend a lot of money in their preparation. A lot of money is generated towards the lobbying process where individuals and groups attempt to influence the legislative process. Candidates spend a lot of money during advertisement on television and radios which incur a high cost. They also advertise in the newspapers and newsletters. Politicians use a lot of money to finance other expenses such as campaign staff, travel as well and office space. Running for office requires candidates to have immense personal wealth or support from various donors. Money has malicious effects in the democracy, although it does not guarantee the elections outcome. Money determines who influences the policies as well those benefiting from the government action thus limiting who get the position to run a viable campaign (Brennan Centre for Justice, 2017).
Money provides easy access to officials, which enables contributors to get more attention. They use economic resources that help to offer information and expertise, get a hearing and draft bills. Interest groups spend billions of dollars every year on lobbying. Money helps lobbyist to seek influence, thus establishing a better relationship with members of the Congress by giving access to campaign money to those who agree with their positions. Public funding of parties and candidates has been the only effort to diversify the sources of political money, thus decreasing the plutocratic influence in politics. Candidates are forced to run costly and expensive campaigns to get elected. Money raised to fund campaigns is generated from corporations, billionaires, banks and wealthy people.
