Substance Abuse with PTSD

As you begin planning for the final project, take advantage of this week's discussion to explore the treatment options available and barriers encountered by service members and veterans.
Discuss the treatment option or options you are considering for your Week 7 Treatment Project, sharing a few details about the method of treatment, specific disorders or conditions it is appropriate to treat, and any information you may have collected related to the access and efficacy of the treatment.
I was thinking of going with this for the week 7 topic paper that this discussion pertains to:
"Substance abuse is also a prevalent issue for service members returning from deployment. Drugs and alcohol are frequently used by service members who report that their effects help them deal with readjustment, PTSD, and a host of other psychological issues they attributed to their time in combat. Many soldiers report utilizing drugs or alcohol during their time on deployment and simply increasing use of those substances upon their return home when other coping mechanisms were insufficient (Olson-Madden, et al., 2010). Others report that, while they did not use drugs while enlisted or drink to excess, the adjustments to civilian life made were made easier once they included drugs or alcohol. Whether drugs and alcohol were a factor in the lives of service members during or prior to deployment, their inclusion post deployment often leads to more severe psychiatric issues and, in some cases crime.
Certain conditions seem to indicate a predisposition of veterans to drug and/or alcohol dependency. Traumatic brain injury experienced on the battlefield often leads individuals to self-medicate with alcohol or drugs. Likewise, chronic pain, depression, and PTSD are often treated with prescription drugs that eventually cease being effective; veterans then turn to illegal drugs and alcohol to achieve the same types of results they found with prescription drugs (Becker, et al., 2009). Even prescription drug abuse is common among veterans as they come to depend upon the drugs they feel make their lives easier. Drug abuse of any kind or dependence on alcohol serves to compound the issues of those recently returned from combat."
