Overview
The consultation occurred between three individuals, Michael, John, and myself, where we discussed our varying experiences in the profession, where every individual was awarded 40 minutes to present. Michael was seeking input since he was working with an individual suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder resulting from the death of her parents in an accident. On the other hand, John sought input regarding the patient suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder. Finally, my case was regarding a 25-year-old male who had bipolar disorder.
The Michael case discussion involved a patient who was having trauma due to the patient's death of her parents. The patient experienced this trauma mainly because she was with her parents when the accident happened. The main reason that prompted her to suffer greatly was that she was driving when her parents died. She blamed herself that she was the main cause of her parent's death, prompting her to contemplate suicide. Michael felt that his therapy was not attaining the expected results. Michael was therefore seeking advice for the best therapy process to help this patient recover.
On the other hand, John has been dealing with patients suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder. In most instances, the patient has been having repetitive, intrusive, unwanted thoughts and excessive, irrational urges to do certain behaviors (Chalah & Ayache, 2020). The main problem that this patient has been having is that despite knowing that these behaviors are not making sense, he has been powerless to stop them. John was therefore seeking the best approach that he could apply to help the patient recover.
I was the last person to present in the peer consultation. My case was regarding a patient with sports-induced asthma in case she had to run for an extended period. This condition was negatively affecting the patient's mental condition. The patient also had low motivation for treatment, anxiety, negative thought patterns, and irritability. Despite offering therapy work, she has also failed to finish it. I was trying to conduct motivational interviewing to redirect the patient from external to internal locus of control. Furthermore, we discussed employing the DBT skill of TIPP while employing distraction methods whenever she feels overwhelmed or irritable.
