Learning Math: Probability, Data analysis and Statistics
Please answer each of the following questions with 5 or more sentences. Use the textbook to help answer each question "A Problem Solving Approach to Mathematics for Elementary School Teachers". Read chapter 9 and 10 from A Problem Solving Approach to Mathematics for Elementary School Teachers.
1. Define probability. Explain in your own words the meaning and significance of Bernoulli’s theorem (law of large numbers). Give some examples of an application of the law. How might you teach the concept to a class?
2.Describe the difference between the probability of two mutually exclusive events, two complementary events, and two events that are not mutually exclusive. Give examples of each.
3.Data may be displayed in a wide variety of forms. Choose several methods of data display discussed in the text and describe the advantages and disadvantages of each. How would you teach students about displaying data?
4.Describe some ways in which statistical data may be abused. Demonstrate an abuse of statistical information through use of an example. Why is it important for students to be aware of statistical abuse in everyday life?

1 Probability is defined in statistics as the likelihood for a specific event or circumstance to happen. Accordingly, Bernoulli’s theorem provides that if one adds together the potential energy, kinetic energy, and pressure energy of a non-viscous and incompressible fluid, it will result in a constant state of streamlined flow. This principle could be seen in the flow of air in an airplane’s wings. Thus, to illustrate this in class, I would be using a model airplane and demonstrate how the air goes through it.
2 The probability between different combinations of events differs due to their relationship to one another. First, when determining the likelihood of two non-mutually exclusive events, one must multiply both of them as if they occur independently. In contrast, when it comes to the probability of two mutually...
