Personal Leadership Philosophy
A career in law enforcement is fulfilling, but it also comes with its fair of challenges. A personal philosophy is vital for developing strategies to help navigate the challenges with the profession and guide one to attain personal goals and those of the organization. In this regard, my personal philosophy is guided by servant leadership in that I focus on empowering the people around me, including community members, colleagues, and those under my supervision. Therefore, guided by servant leadership, my philosophy encompasses hiring the right personnel, effective training of employees, and competent supervision.
My philosophy is underpinned by servant leadership. Eva et al. (2019) noted that servant leadership engages followers in many ways, including spiritual, ethical, rational, and emotional dimensions, to empower them to attain their potential. According to Gotsis and Grimani (2016), servant leadership is about listening, caring, creating an environment of love, and fostering commitment to change and interactional justice. These perspectives of servant leadership describe well my leadership philosophy. I consider myself accountable and responsible for my colleagues and those I supervise. I make sure to create an environment that helps them attain their potentials for the better of themselves, the organization, and the community.
One key element of my philosophy is ensuring that I hire the right personnel who align with the organization's goals. Getting it right when it comes to the recruitment of officers and civilian employees is valuable to the organization and me. I understand that the personnel is hired to provide services to community members, and therefore, they must possess values that promote transparent delivery of service. I addition, the quality of the whole organization depends significantly on the personnel absorbed. My hiring strategy is characterized by defining the job, reviewing applications and qualifications, asking relevant questions during interviews, and checking the candidates' backgrounds. This process is consistent with the recruitment and selection procedures recommended by HR scholars (Mondy & Martocchio, 2016). There are particular values I look for in candidates to guarantee the success of the hiring process. Some of these values include trustworthiness, leadership, and honesty.
