Crisis Intervention Plan in Response to School Shooting

Coursework Instructions:

Introduction
You’ll apply the concepts you’ve learned in this course to develop a crisis intervention plan in response to a school shooting.
Instructions
Scenario
The police station receives a report that gunshots have been fired at a local middle school. The initial news is that there are fatalities, and panicked children have called their parents. Now, parents have shown up at the school along with the local media.
Your task as a first responder is to develop a crisis intervention plan. Your plan should include how to do the following:
Determine the cause of the shooting.
Deal with the media and the parents.
Stop the violence before more students get injured or killed.
Research
Your main research source will be your textbook when creating the program for the survivors. You should also use the references listed in this section, or conduct your research using reliable, relevant sources. Whether you agree or disagree with the authors, you must support your argument with reliable material from the provided sources. Also, if you have life experience in this area, you may include this information in your paper.

The events described in the case scenario depicts a crisis and thus the need for a practical intervention plan. A middle school experiences a shooting involving an exchange of live bullets. The shooting brought forth detrimental impacts, including the death of some students, and created fear and anxiety in the entire school among the students and staff. This paper will explain a crisis intervention I undertook as a first responder. The plan sheds light on the approaches undertaken to control the situation. The program further highlights the perceived incidences that triggered the shooting and how I handled the mourning and distressed parents and the media. It also offers insights on approaches embraced to combat the violence from spreading further and causing injuries and deaths of more students.
Determine the Cause of the Shooting
There is a need to investigate and determine the events that triggered the shooting incident to draft and prepare an appropriate and applicable intervention crisis plan (Soma, 2017). The determination of the shooting causes calls for a partnership and collaboration with the school management, psychologists, and government officials. It is crucial to establish the reasons and motivation behind the shooting, any signs given prior by the perpetrators, and the events that preceded the violent shooting and killing. The plan at this point should create a crisis intervention party in an effort to identify the killers' surroundings (Office for Victims of Crime (n.d.). According to Soma (2017), there is a strong connection between a learner’s behavior and private logic. Private logic implies how the child thinks, views themselves, others, and the environment around them. Students are bound to act based on that logic. In addition, the first responder should consider the awareness of what has transpired, as this is more crucial than the shooting incident itself. Therefore, the first responder team would also analyze the student's socialization and prior mental health concerns that might have initiated the shooting. The students' reactions towards the matter and establishing the shooters' background would be beneficial in establishing the cause of the incident and mitigating the potential of similar incidents happening in the future (Kanel, 2019).
Dealing with Parents and The Media
One of the fundamental and crucial aspects of the crisis intervention plan incorporates addressing the media sources and parents' worries in the scene's vicinity. At this point, the program would embrace open and proactive communication with the affected people and the media personalities. The contact would be adequate by appointing a neutral spokesperson. He will be responsible for explaining the events accurately as they occurred to combat incidences of misinformation that may destroy the school's reputation (Kanel, 2019). A media press briefing is critical to help update the public on the prevailing incidents and illuminate current investigations. The media and press briefing would also emphasize the approaches to facilitate the safety of the learners and the school (Office for Victims of Crime, (n.d.). In addition, th...
