Media Pitch and Contact List Assignment

Start with the contact list.

Media contact lists are used for having a collection of relevant people that could be interested in covering and writing about your material (where you might send your news release/fact sheet). Create a media contact list that contains the following information for five contacts. The outlets should be relevant to your company. Please provide the following information for each contact: Outlet, Name (of contact), Role/Title, Email and/or Phone. You must provide a phone and/or email (either one or both, but at least one). You can submit this in any form as long as it contains the information for 5 contacts, but it might be easiest in a Word doc or Excel spreadsheet. There is an example template linked under the name “Media Contact List” that you can use if you’d like.

Media Pitch.

Select one of your contacts from the list of five. You are going to pitch the media outlet, and specific reporter, and invite them to write about your company with an exclusive interview. It can be about your anniversary celebration, events/media tour, issues response, thought leadership, or news (exclusive, embargo, day of).

When you write the pitch, make an offer to set up an interview with the reporter and your company’s CEO or founder. It could be an exclusive to talk about the event being planned or any inside scoop. You will be writing this pitch letter in an email format.

More background: In the “Applying the PESO Model” assignment, you were asked to create four ideas for communicating your company anniversary event. In the “Earned” section, you should have proposed a way that you, as a PR professional, will earn coverage. This could be considered another earned strategy.

Remember a good pitch letter:

  • Makes it clear that the event, person or topic is newsworthy.
  • Invites an exclusive look or interview.
  • Offers sufficient information and assistance so that editors and reporters can easily make decisions.
  • Gets quickly to the point and is persuasive without being self-serving.
  • Does not exceed 200 words in length and uses AP style.

 Submit the assignment in a Word doc via Blackboard. There is no specific format, but this must be written to resemble an actual email with a “To” and a compelling “Subject” line that will make the journalist want to open it.

The Blackboard submission page will allow for multiple submissions so you can submit two documents. The first is the contact list and the second is the media pitch.
