After half a decade of trying numerous chief executive officers (CEO), in 2012, Yahoo! got the right person. Marissa Mayer had extensive experience in product engineering. As such, Yahoo! major stakeholders believed that she would be the individual to restore the company’s growth. Chapter nine depicts that an effective leader should take control of the information flow and workers’ morale. By scanning the firm’s operating environment, Mayer made relevant internal changes (Dess, Lumpkin, Eisner, & McNamara, 2012). For example, she abolished Yahoo!’s work-at-home policy since she believed that face-to-face interactions foster creativity and innovation (Case 35). By doing so, Mayer was trying to alter Yahoo!’s organizational culture, which significantly affects the firm’s performance.
Despite employees’ criticisms, Mayer knew what she was doing, and it was for the benefit of the company. The CEO motivated workers by allowing them to exchange their BlackBerry cellphones with new iPhones and other Android-powered smartphones. Additionally, she offered employees free food in Yahoo!’s cafeteria. In other words, she wanted workers to change their perception of the company’s cost-cutting emphasis.
