In terms of personal Earth Overshoot Day that would be March 7, a bit more concerning is the fact that I would need 5.4 Earths to support me. In essence, these figures indicate that the present manner of living is unsustainable. The March 7 date means that if everyone lived in a similar way to mine, then it would take less than 2.5 months to exhaust nature’s budget for the year. The remaining months would be marked by a significant ecological deficit that is evident in the accumulation of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere as well as drawing down local resource stocks. This position justifies the number of Earths that are needed to support me.
There are a couple of reasons for the prevailing situation. First, the consumption of processed and packaged food implies much of the earth’s resources are committed to these procedures compared to if they were grown domestically. The domestic production of food is primarily bent on planting and harvesting crops on the garden, which is then consumed directly. On the other hand, cows’ milk is used to prepare tea, and the surplus sold to neighbors. In such a society, fewer resources are committed to the consequent manufacturing processes of these products. Also, using cars is an inefficient way of transportation considering its emissions. At the moment it is even worse than I have no individuals with whom we can carpool. Further, I do not use public transportation, which would mean that the relative emissions per person are reduced significantly. The inability to use renewable energy and trash are other significant causes of these figures as they also constitute the elements that consume much of the earth’s resources adversely.
Even though the number may not be accurate, there is only a small deviation to its accounting for the dynamics in daily living.
