Politicians’ Quotes about Climate Change Sciences Coursework

Coursework Instructions:

ATM 201, Homework #4Search through the news (source choice is yours) for a statement made about the cause(s) of climate change by four different politicians in the last twenty years. Write a one- to two-paragraph evaluation/critique of each politician’s statement based on what you have learned in the course thus far. Consider the following for each politician's statement:
Is it scientifically accurate? Justify your assessment. How would you correct or support the politician's statement using one real example of climate change in the past?
Each politician's statement must be distinctly different from the others. In other words, you can't reuse what is basically the same statement from two or more politicians (e.g., one politician says “It's just another climate cycle," while another politician says “Earth has many natural climate cycles."). J
For each example that you provide, also include the name of the politician, a quote of what that politician said, and the specific source of your quote (so that I can check it if necessary).Grading rubric c.
For each of politician (four at 25 points each; 100 points total), did you ...
- ... correctly quote the politician/friend (can't really assess for the friend)? 5 points
- ... correctly assess the scientific accuracy of the quote? 7 points
- ... provide a valid example from Earth's past climate that either supports or refutes the person’s statement? 13 pointsSubmission instructions

Politicians’ Quotes about Climate Change
In an article by CNBC, Joe Biden said, “climate change is the number one issue facing humanity and vowed a national transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy that could create millions of new jobs” (Newburger, 2020). Biden’s statement is scientifically accurate since it shows that fossil fuels are one of the causes of climate change. For example, burning fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, which causes an increase in temperature and precipitation.
In 2016, Hillary Clinton suggested, “reducing American oil consumption by a third through cleaner fuels and more efficient cars, boilers, ships, and trucks” (Roberts, 2016). Clinton’s argument was scientifically correct since when oil is burned it emits greenhouse gases, which causes climate change. For instance, it has been found that the use of conventional cars contributes to global warming due to the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
President Donald Trump said, “As to whether or not it’s man-made and whether or not the effects that you’re talking about are there, I don’t see it” (Dawsey, Rucker, Dennis, & Mooney, 2018). Trump’s point is not scientifically valid since it shows the lack of understanding about the causes of climate change and how it threatens humanity. For example, it would be ignorant for Trump to assume that he does not know whether climate change is man-made or not since its effects on the environment are visible worldwide.
