SHORT SUMMARY OF THE ASSIGNED TEXT:
The Golden Rule suggests that everyone should treat others in a manner they would expect to be treated. In his text The Not So Golden Rule, Dan Flores acknowledges John C. Maxwell and Genler in their supportive claims for the Golden Rule. Maxwell claims that all should accept the Golden Rule because it is shared well across most religions and cultures, easy to understand, the double philosophical wins, and finally serves as a moral compass. Genler, despite disagreeing with Maxwell's traditional Golden Rule, suggests that the maxim ought to include the "present" and "same situation" clauses such as the prevailing circumstances of an action or a course of action. This way, Genler accommodates the different relations and circumstances within which human interactions occur.
In his criticism, Flores dismisses the claims of both Maxwell and Genler. For Maxwell's case (Literal Golden rule), the text considers it to lack specificity, diversity and be interpreted in a very literal manner.
