Education Law: Zero Tolerance Discipline Policy
This is a study of zero tolerance laws in selected public educational institutions.
Step One: Some of the zero tolerance laws as highlighted in the policy of University of California Riverside, that govern students conduct include laws against forgery, drug abuse, weapons and explosives, harassment and physical abuse. The policy states; “Chancellors may impose discipline for the commission or attempted commission (including aiding or abetting in the commission or attempted commission) of the following types of violations by students, as well as such other violations as may be specified in campus regulations” (UCR, 2016). The school’s anti-firearm policy reads; “possession, use, or manufacture of a firearm or other weapon as prohibited by campus regulations” (UCR, 2016). The alcohols policy reads, “unlawful manufacture, distribution, dispensing, possession, use, or sale of, or the attempted manufacture, distribution, dispensing, or sale of controlled substances, identified in federal and state law or regulations” (UCR, 2016). Some of the discipline methods the university imposes include counseling, expulsion, and suspension.
The Charles Sturt University also has zero tolerance laws within its policy. The university includes suspension from any facility when a student’s behavior fulfils sufficient grounds to be misconduct. For example, a student may incur suspension when; “there is an imminent threat of misconduct by a student in that facility. The person in charge of that facility may, for the purpose of halting or preventing the misconduct, suspend the student from the use of or entry to that facility or part of that facility for a period of up to two weeks” (CSU, 2014).
Step Two: The Strawberry Mansion High School in Philadelphia has several zero tolerance laws within its policy. Some severe disciplinary procedures include suspension, expulsion, or reporting to policy.

1 The Strawberry Mansion High School in Philadelphia has disciplinary procedures for several misconducts including other behaviors regarded as crime such as possession of a weapon, theft, robbery, reckless endangerment, sexual act, and drugs among others (Neff, 2016).
2 Some of the disciplinary actions that the school takes on the above and other misconducts include expulsion, suspension, interim placements on students with weapons, drugs and violence cases, counseling and conducting hearings (Neff, 2016)..
3 The school had once been in the list of one of the most dangerous in the country. However, several changes are now in place to ensure creation of a friendly learning environment in the school. The law of the school has not faced any legal challenges regarding its severity. These laws meet constitutional threshold. In fact, the U.S. Attorney created a teen court in the school to teach the students about being law-abiding citizens (Murray & Witt, 2014).
