This is a study of zero tolerance laws in selected public educational institutions.
Step One: Some of the zero tolerance laws as highlighted in the policy of University of California Riverside, that govern students conduct include laws against forgery, drug abuse, weapons and explosives, harassment and physical abuse. The policy states; “Chancellors may impose discipline for the commission or attempted commission (including aiding or abetting in the commission or attempted commission) of the following types of violations by students, as well as such other violations as may be specified in campus regulations” (UCR, 2016). The school’s anti-firearm policy reads; “possession, use, or manufacture of a firearm or other weapon as prohibited by campus regulations” (UCR, 2016). The alcohols policy reads, “unlawful manufacture, distribution, dispensing, possession, use, or sale of, or the attempted manufacture, distribution, dispensing, or sale of controlled substances, identified in federal and state law or regulations” (UCR, 2016). Some of the discipline methods the university imposes include counseling, expulsion, and suspension.
The Charles Sturt University also has zero tolerance laws within its policy. The university includes suspension from any facility when a student’s behavior fulfils sufficient grounds to be misconduct. For example, a student may incur suspension when; “there is an imminent threat of misconduct by a student in that facility.
