The topic of the legalization of marijuana has led to intense debates. Proponents have pointed out that the legalization of marijuana is instrumental in increasing government tax revenue. The production of marijuana is a source of employment for otherwise jobless individuals (Popovici & French, 2014). They also point out that the legalization would allow patients to access medical marijuana for therapeutic purposes. Hence, this will minimize the use of more harmful drugs like opioids. On the contrary, the legalization of marijuana would enable greater accessibility of the drug and lead to more use. The cannabis market would increase and likely include children and teenagers. Heavy use of marijuana among children and adolescents can increase the risk for mental health illnesses like anxiety and depression.
Since the legalization of marijuana in Colorado and Washington in 2012, several challenges have emerged. Firstly, since the legalization of marijuana, traffic deaths for drivers testing positive for the drug have increased. For instance, in Colorado, traffic deaths where the drivers tested positive for marijuana increased by 109% leading to an overall increase in traffic deaths by 31%. The number of people killed by drivers who tested positive for the drug increased from 55 in 2013 to 115 in 2018 (Rocky Mountain High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area program, 2019). Additionally, marijuana use remains illegal at the federal level. The states face the challenge of conflicting federal laws that still classify cannabis as a Schedule I drug.
