The vessel Emilia was one of the ships transporting enslaved people from West Africa to America. Pessoa Jose Henriques owned the vessel, and in its 88th voyage, the ship sailed from Rio de Janeiro (6/9/1817) and successfully delivered enslaved people to its original owners on 15th June 1818. Captained by Almeida, Andre Germano, the ship had 290 enslaved people from 391 who embarked from the Bight of Benin in West Africa. This indicates a mortality rate of 26%, where up to 120 Africans died before arrival in Brazil.
The ship fits within the history of the transatlantic slave trade. According to Hawthorn, the ship was seized by the British Navy, and the captain was accused of breaking international laws that forbade slave trade in the north of the equator. Secondly, other scholars like Behrendt et al. have documented that during this time in his story, there was a lot of coercion and forceful capture of Africans from their lands which prompted a series of resistance activities that remain undocumented or do not often feature in literature.
