Therefore, Andrew Jonson was considered the most logical choice to help send a message of national unity and to gain Southern support.

Carpetbagger is a term used to describe the Northerners who seized political offices in the South as a way to get rich quickly. Lastly, scalawags comprised the southerners who aligned themselves with carpetbaggers to take advantage of political openings. Therefore, the difference between the latter two and sharecroppers is that sharecroppers were primarily working class while carpetbaggers and scalawags comprised the political class.
