Atlantic Revolutions and the Subsequent Creation
The core concepts/themes/terms that emerge across the first two units of the course relate to the long-term effects of Enlightenment ideas on the Atlantic Revolutions and the subsequent creation of the modern world. In just fifty years, the revolutions across the European and American continent radically transformed the Atlantic World governments: the European empires lost their foothold in the Americas, and new states emerged. After the costly Seven Years' War, the decision by the British and French governments to raise taxes to pay for war expenses resulted in the American and French revolutions. The formerly involved calls for self-rule and near independence by American colonies, while the latter entailed the wholesale removal of monarchical regimes. The Americans succeeded in overthrowing their British colonial masters and creating a new and relatively egalitarian nation, while the French managed to abolish nobility and found a representative democracy.
I believe the Atlantic Revolutions are significant because they paved the way for democratic governments. After America gained independence and the French ended the constitutional monarchy of King Louis XVI, the political and social structural changes were imported by other countries that also desired equal rights, an end to feudalism, and modern government administrations (Class Text, 2022). This yearning was demonstrated in the Haitian Revolution when the locals not only fought against foreign powers but also fought for human rights and equality.
