Public Health Nurses (PHNs) engage in various activities to improve the health of families and communities, such as promoting health, preventing diseases, and providing health education. As per the Galveston County Health District (GCHD, 2021), PHNs offer services, including immunizations, maternal and child health care, WIC program, and family planning to the community.
When working with families, nurses use different theoretical frameworks from the social sciences. The Family Systems Theory, the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) Model, and the Ecological Systems Theory (EST) are three commonly used frameworks. Ersig et al. (2019) state that the Family Systems Theory considers the family as a whole and acknowledges the interaction and relationships among family members. The SDOH model recognizes that social factors such as housing, education, and income can affect health outcomes. The EST emphasizes the importance of the environment and its influence on behaviour and health outcomes.
