While urinary tract infection (UTI) is more common in all sections of the population, elderly women aged above 65 years of age are more susceptible to the disease. Women are more susceptible than men due to the shorter length of the urethra, which eases bacteria entry into the bladder, with age increasing susceptibility to the disease significantly. Medina and Castillo-Pino (2019) reported that the prevalence of UTIs in women aged more than 65 years is 20 percent compared to only 11 percent for the overall population.
The most common agent of UTIs is the Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC), which normally lives in the digestive tract but can cause an infection if it enters the urinary tract. UPEC has been found to account for roughly75 percent prevalence of uncomplicated UTIS among the infected and 65 percent of the instances of complicated UTIs (Medina & Castillo-Pino, 2019).
