Nurses play a crucial role in the delivery of quality health in hospitals. They are they are the ones that spend most of the time with the patient in the acute healthcare facilities. A low nurse to patient ratio has a significant impact on the quality of care transferred to the patient and job satisfaction from the nursing point of view (Bucchan, Seccombe,Gershlic, & Anita, 2017). In the recent past, there has been a rising concern on the relationship between the ratio of nurses in hospitals and the safety of patients. Scholars have emphasized that a higher nurse to patient ratio translates to reduced deaths and enhanced patient safety. The present study will seek to investigate the impact of shortage of nurses in hospitals on patients and the impact on nurses. The study will thrive on a PICOT question to complete the evidence-based study.
PICOT Question
The PICOT question will act as a compass for completing this study. The PICOT question formulated for this study is: In the hospitals dealing with a higher number of patients, what is the impact of the shortage of nurses to the quality of service delivered?
Population
Population is the sample selected for the study. The target population for this study is patients admitted in healthcare facilities.
Intervention
Intervention is the issue that calls for attention to be addressed. The intervention in this case is exposure of patients to a low number of nurses or exposing small number of nurses to higher number of patients.
Comparison
Comparison refers to alternative approaches that could yield desirable results. In this case, comparison includes hiring additional nurses, recruiting retired nurses, or ignoring the problem.
Outcome
The outcome refers to the expectations from this study. The study intends to expose the impact of shortage of nursing on quality of care in hospitals. The study intends to expose the risk of nursing shortage in hospitals.
Time
