Endocrinopathies can be categorized as primary, secondary, or tertiary based on the endocrine glands' dysfunctionality. Primary disorders are associated with inhibition of downstream glands' actions. Secondary disorders are associated with the pituitary gland under stimulation or overstimulation, while tertiary disorders result from hypothalamus dysfunction (Corenblum and Flynn, 2017). The adrenal system illustrates the differences between primary, secondary, and tertiary hypersecretion and hyposecretion. The adrenal gland's primary hyposecretion resulting from a disease such as Addison's disease leads to low aldosterone and cortisol levels (McCance and Huether, 2019).
On the other hand, primary hypersecretion, such as from tumors secreting adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTH), elevates cortisol levels.
