My PICO Problem project
PICO Question
Evidence-based practice (EBP) has been increasing in the healthcare industry. EBP incorporates scientifically tested interventions that promise better health outcomes and high-quality healthcare. The given evidence used in offering health services is derived from scientific studies conducted, which introduces the idea of the PICO. PICO is a model most widely used by researchers to formulate the research question. As research shows, research questions are the most critical parts of studies as they guide researchers and express the question the activity is set to answer (Eldawlatly et al., 2018). The research question combines all the essential components of a study and facilitates the literature review, among other things (Eldawlatly et al., 2018). The PICO model introduces the features that ought to be in the research question.
For the identified problem of a lack of screening among African American males forty-five years and above living in the suburban area, a PICO question was developed. Will providing early education to African American men on prostate cancer increase their knowledge/awareness of the need for early detection prostate cancer and increase screening for the disease?
From the PICO question, the different components from the PICO model are defined. The first initial is the P, and this represents the population or problem under the spotlight (Eldawlatly et al., 2018). The population under investigation is characterized by their age, gender, and race, among other characteristics. For this problem, the population is African American men over the age of forty-five that are seen at the private clinic.
The next component is the intervention represented by the letter I (Eldawlatly et al., 2018). The intervention represents the plan that will be used to address the problem in the chosen population. The intervention is providing early education to African American men on their risk of prostate cancer and to seek health screening to reduce the prevalence of prostate cancer and its consequences.
The letter C represents the comparison, which looks at another therapy being compared to the one that is being implemented (Eldawlatly et al., 2018). In this situation, the comparison is no early education. The population will have a pretest and a posttest on the risk of prostate cancer and the need for early screening. The percent screened following the intervention will be compared to the percent screened of the general African American male population seen at the clinic aged 45 years and older.
The outcomes represented by the letter O conclude the PICO model, and these address the effects expected to come from the intervention (Eldawlatly et al., 2018). There are two outcomes identified: knowledge of the prevalence of prostate cancer and prostate cancer screening. The anticipated outcomes are to increase the knowledge of prostate cancer and rate of early detection through screening. Early detection would lead to early treatment of prostate cancer, ultimately reducing the mortality rate.
