First, I learned that there are many potential ways in which nurses may inadvertently violate HIPAA rules. Potential violations can occur when nurses access patient information that is not relevant to their role, engage in conversations about patients outside of a professional context, or disclose protected health information (PHI) to unauthorized individuals (HIPAA Journal, 2017). The use of social media can also present a risk if nurses post PHI there. Regardless of whether a violation is intentional or accidental, nurses may face disciplinary action as a result. Thus, it is essential for nurses to be aware of and strictly adhere to HIPAA regulations.
