It allows for the dissemination of nursing theoretical principles and concepts for their effective application in practices. The enhanced cognitive abilities further allow nurses to identify correlations among different concepts for effective delivery of health care needs.

Learners are first introduced or exposed to new concepts through basic learning. The second step is limited association of the concepts to different care needs through comparisons and questioning of suggested courses of action (Breytenbach, 2017). An advanced comprehension review through the integration of relationships analysis forms the third step or stage. The last step involves the integration of the creative thinking developed into practice or skills to evaluate the scope of practice awareness.

Concept mapping makes use of various learning styles including the use of visual and audio aids, verbal and written materials, as well as the use of kinesthetic (Breytenbach, 2017). Visual and audio aids help in the understanding of concepts read in books or taught in class. Kinesthetic provides hands-on experience in the application of the concepts learned.
