Leading Killers in Men’s Health
Question #1): It is widely known that on average, women will outlive men. Please submit (3) reasons for this phenomenon AND explain your reasons.
One of the leading reasons women outlive men is that the latter’s frontal lobe develops slowly compared to the former’s. This part represents the brain section that influences how a person makes judgments and assesses the consequences of their actions. According to Chapter 9, this developmental delay places men at increased risk of frequently exposing themselves to life-threatening dangers, unlike their female counterparts. They engage in dangerous plays, risky behaviors like alcohol and drug abuse, and recklessness, such as excessive speeding while driving (“Chapter 9,” n.d.). As a result, they have higher morbidity rates and suffer mental-related challenges that can lead to suicidal ideation.
Although the second reason for women outliving men is controversial, it illustrates iron’s role in diminishing life expectancy among males. Despite being fundamental in oxygen transportation throughout the body as a constituent of hemoglobin, iron’s excessive accumulation across the lifespan is a risk. Chapter 9 demonstrates that while women regularly lose iron through menstruation, men continue accumulating it, leading to toxicity that affects the heart’s health. For instance, by the time women reach their menopause years, their iron levels are four times lesser (“Chapter 9,” n.d.). The surprising aspect is that they are also four times less likely to suffer from cardiovascular diseases compared to men. These statistics demonstrate how men become exposed to life-limiting situations unknowingly.
Another non-modifiable factor that predisposes men to a shorter lifespan compared to women is the testosterone hormone. Evidence suggests that despite the numerous benefits associated with this hormone, its leading downside is that it induces an immune diminishing mechanism (“Chapter 9,” n.d.). This action makes ...
