The Texas Advance Directives Act, which is the legislation that governs advance directives in Texas, gives people the opportunity to decide early on how they want to be treated if they are deemed incompetent. An individual can legally sign a directive for life or a health care power of attorney. A directive for life is a legal document that states what kind of health services a person desires or does not. In contrast, a healthcare power of attorney allows someone to make healthcare choices for the person being treated when they cannot perform them alone.
Establishing advance directives allows people to dictate their medical care and assures that their intentions are honored, which is advantageous legally. It also lessens the chance of arguments or legal action among relatives and medical professionals (Tomlinson, 2019). Nevertheless, a moral drawback of advance directives is that they can infringe on medical personnel's obligations of acting in the best regard of the individual, which occasionally needs to be aligned with a patient's intentions.
