The doctor should tell the patient the truth about their state. It is important that the patient knows their medical status, irrespective of how bad it may be. Not telling the patient their status would use them as mere subjects to medical tests to be performed, which is not the intention of the treatment.
Mill juggles between actions and results: the action here is telling the patient their status while the result is how they feel afterwards. Will it make them happier? Therefore, as a good doctor, the action you should take is to count on the slim chance the patient has to recover, and wait for the results after.
