Identification of the Problem
One of the primary health concerns in our societies today is prison overcrowding. As a result of lack of enough space and necessities for all criminals, prison overcrowding has resulted in various health problems (Sadiq & Parveen, 2014). Prison overcrowding has contributed to poor conditions for prisoners in the United States and around the globe, and it's the biggest challenge facing the prison systems. The consequences can be life-threatening, preventing prisons form achieving its purpose. The significant aspect of prison overcrowding is that it can be legislated and thus strategies on how to curb it can be implemented.
Proposal/Idea
According to Sadiq and Parveen (2014), prison overcrowding issues make the management let out prisoners even before their sentence is complete and this is a significant threat to the community at large. The courts should allow the drug offenders to serve shorter sentences which could save the system from costs and reduce congestion. Judges should also be given a higher discretion over sentencing, which could result in minimum sentences for the non-violent criminals which would curb overcrowding. The system should also lower the standards in sentences requirement and require the offenders to serve 70% of their sentences instead, which would reduce overcrowding.
