Technology is increasingly integrated into healthcare to improve outcomes and efficiency. This includes biomedical technology, information technology and knowledge technology. The biomedical technology assists in administering, monitoring therapies, therapeutic interventions and diagnostics. Information technology focuses on data analytics to improve delivery of healthcare. Knowledge technology uses technological systems to support clinical decision making to improve patient care while mimicking the expert nurse reasoning (Yoder-Wise, 2015).
Areas impacted by adoption of healthcare technology
The case for Electric health records (EHR) is that it allows better access to patient care information for authorized parties, as multiple providers need to coordinate care and the EHR platforms allow this (Vartian et al., 2014). However, there is a challenge to implementing EHR because of the cost implications, while the hospital administration and nurse leader ought to be agents of change to ensure the success of EHRs.
Another area is the computerized physician provider order entry (CPOE), where physicians and providers rely on the medical orders when placing the medication (Vartian et al., 2014). The CPOE is an electronic approach that allows the physician/ provider to specify the procedural orders, medication orders, admission, laboratory and referral. Even though, the ordering system reduces medication errors it is necessary for the physicians and providers to alter their practice for effective implementation of CPOE.
