Introduction
The human resource management course sheds light on some of the most important aspects of human resource management through class readings and assignments. For each assignment given, there were new lessons learned and this memo is a reflection of all the lessons. It offers a summary of the insights gained during the process of learning this course. The first section of the memo discusses the key lessons from the course. The second section highlights some of my key areas of strength based on the feedback provided. The third section outlines the key areas of improvement I identified based on the feedback provided for all the assignments. The fourth section discusses how those past assignments have helped or can help me build my credibility and skills as a human resources (HR) practitioner. The last section of the memo provides a list of all the research materials used in the memo.
Lessons Learned
Each assignment provided me with an opportunity to learn about some of the crucial aspects of human resource management. In assignment one, I learned about the process of acquiring employees. HR specialists have to use various strategies in acquiring employees since organizations operate in a competitive environment and human capital is one of the competitive resources. I learned that when organizations operate in highly competitive environments, employee acquisition can be lateral (hiring experts for a specific job) or cluster (hiring a group of experienced professionals from competitors) (Boon, Eckardt, Lepak, & Boselie, 2018). Also, I learned about the interview process, including the various tests used in interviews, such as aptitude and cognitive tests. The assignments also shed some light on the importance of training and development. Training and development ensure that employees have access to knowledge, which is crucial to the efficiency and success of the organization (Pasban & Nojedeh, 2016). Also, I learned how to determine whether training was effective by comparing the set goals with the outcomes after the training. Also, through the case study of Telespazio, I learned how different tools can be applied in employees’ performance appraisal. Performance appraisal is a crucial element of HR management and different performance appraisal tools have varying benefits (Rubin & Edwards, 2018). I also learned that when not selected carefully, these appraisal tools can be seen as a source of bias and discrimination by employees.
