When we think of exercise it’s often correlated with images of people who are physically fit and practice healthy eating habits. As we age our bodies previous muscle and physical functions can decline, limiting one’s ability to carry out previous tasks practiced daily such as exercise. “Declines in strength and muscle function with age -sarcopenia- contribute to a variety of negative outcomes including an increased risk of: falls, fracture, hospitalizations and reduced mobility in older persons” (Oikawa, et al., 2019, para. 1).
It is well known cardiac problems are a leading cause of death among individuals worldwide. Exercising and changing eating habits can decrease one’s chances of being diagnosed with cardiac diseases and other comorbidities that can follow. “Physical exercise can also improve cardiovascular functions through adaptations to the heart and vascular system. Regular physical exercise decreases resting heart rate, blood pressure, atherogenic markers and increases physiological cardiac hypertrophy” (Pinckard, et al., 2019, para. 2). Addressing these issues during the preventive care stage can assist one in living a healthy and prolonged life.
Addressing mental health is a much-needed topic in today’s society. Exercising can help alleviate some of the stressors that cause mental anguish. “People who exercise regularly generally state that they feel better, have increased self-esteem and have a more positive outlook on life” (Edelman & Kudzma, 2022, p. 308). Incorporating exercise in one’s daily routine can be a vital component in combating some forms of mental health.
Following the recommendation and plan for an order related to exercise prescriptions can increase improvement in a patient’s health overall. We must evaluate the patient’s willingness to follow the plan. After this step is completed, the patient, doctor and other members of the healthcare team can determine the patient’s tolerance for said plan. From this the plan can be adjusted accordingly to match patient’s and ensure patient can make successful attempts to reach exercise goals.

Exercise and Aging
The importance of physical activity at all stages of life is a well-researched topic. However, it is true that as people age, it becomes difficult to engage in physical activity. The discussion post supported this thesis with current literature, revealing that exercise can have immense health benefits for people, especially as they age. I found the discussion quite informative, especially because it is supported by examples. For instance, the post showed the connection between age and mobility among older people. It revealed that aging increases the risk of fracture, falls, and low mobility due to sarcopenia. However, I think the discussion could be strengthened by discussing the effects of exercise on sarcopenia. For instance, according to Yoo et al. (2018), a combination of aerobic and resistance exercises plays a significant role in fighting sarcopenia. These links exercise to improved muscle mass and function. This benefit should be considered while creating a plan for the pa...
