The idea of “informed consent” is an important social issue that often comes up in healthcare settings. It is essential to uphold people’s autonomy and ensure that all patients, regardless of their culture, get the same care. Healthcare professionals are morally obligated to ensure that their patients fully understand the possible outcomes, side effects, and alternatives to any surgical treatments or therapies they recommend (International Council of Nurses, 2023). The patient is then expected to use this knowledge to guide their treatment. When cultural differences are taken into account, however, it becomes more challenging to get real informed agreement (American Nurses Association, 2018). Cultural awareness is to the conversation about informed consent because people from different cultural backgrounds may have other ideas about what’s important. It is essential to give healthcare workers thorough training in cultural skills to understand better their patients’ different cultural points of view. A big part of this training program is learning to understand and work with people from different cultures.
Language services are a common problem in healthcare settings where people from different cultures deal with each other. The ability of people to give informed consent depends on how well they understand the information given to them (Morley et al., 2020). Because of this, it is essential to offer translation services or hire bilingual staff. Recognize that a patient’s cultural values and beliefs may affect their decisions, and give these values and beliefs the respect they deserve (Doherty, 2020). Some groups value family-centered, group-based ways of making decisions, while others love the freedom of each person. Sticking to these strong views and involving family and close friends as needed is very important.
