Empowering Fellow Nurses and Patients

Coursework Instructions:

Discussion: Nurse/Patient Empowerment
As a nurse, you are the individual who has the ability to empower patients in the decision-making process pertaining to their health care. In addition, you are in a unique position to empower your nursing colleagues to improve job satisfaction and use performance indicator data from dashboards to effect social change.
In this week’s Learning Resources, you examined both the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) and the key role nurses play as advocates for patient rights. To assist nurses in being better prepared for this role, programs such as Patient Care Partnership provide guidance.
For this Discussion, you will analyze the use of quality improvement data and discuss how this data can help empower both patients and nurses. Review the Patient Care Partnership information presented in this week’s Resources. In addition, reflect on the media presentation and the information shared by Ms. Manna on patients’ rights.
By Day 3
Respond to the following:
What are the best strategies the nurse can employ to empower patients and support patients’ rights to improve quality of care? (Some considerations to keep in mind may include: providing information on effectiveness, risks, and benefits of alternative treatments.)
In what ways can NDNQI data from dashboards or quality improvement data be used to support nurse empowerment in practice?
How has your institution empowered the nursing staff through the use of quality improvement data?
Provide an example of how you have personally empowered either a patient or a fellow nurse.
Support your response with references from the professional nursing literature.

Strategies aimed at empowering nurses and patients have been put forward by different scholars, alongside the empirical data to support the overall objective of empowerment in the health care system.
Patient engagement, to imply the various ways in which a healthcare practitioner deploys to ensure mutuality with the patient, is one of the most effective strategies in empowering patients (Guglielmi et al., 2014). Patient engagement ensures that the healthcare providers earn the trust of the patient and is also crucial in ensuring patient satisfaction. Nurses also have a role in educating the patients on their rights as patients, providing all the relevant information regarding a medical procedure or medication, and even supporting the patient in making the correct decision as part of the patient engagement (Guglielmi et al., 2014). To advocate for patients’ rights, nurses should be armed with all the right answers for the questions that arise while trying to obtain patient consent and should also be willing to educate the patient on the importance of their wilful consent (Rock & Hoebeke, 2014).
Quality improvement data is useful in the creation of awareness not only to the members of the general public but also to the nurses about a particular scenario affecting the healthcare system (Garrard et al., 2016). The data can also act as a driving force for improvement, capable of highlighting the different areas of healthcare practice that need improvement in a more precise and reliable manner (Garrard et al., 2016). NDNQI data capture performance data on a na...
