BARRIERS TO EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE
According to the Institute of Medicine, the United States should attain a 90% evidence-based practice level by 2020. However, HealthyPeople.gov suggests that currently, the US stands at 15%. This paper will discuss barriers that inhibit the attainment of 90% evidence-based practice as envisaged by the Institute of Medicine (IoM) and suggest ways of addressing the identified barriers.
Evidence-based practice is a fundamental underlying factor in healthcare service delivery in the United States since healthcare quality is largely underpinned by the use of best evidence. The barriers to raising evidence-based practice level from the current 15% to 90% by 2020 includes a disconnect between research and practice, difficulty in tracking healthcare changes and the inability of nurses to actively search for relevant evidence-based information (Majid et al., 2011). Still, other barriers to this endeavor are poor patient compliance and the nurses’s inability to influence structural and policy changes within healthcare (Newman, Papadopoulos & Sigsworth, J. (2012). Organisational barriers include low management priority, evidence dissemination issues, inadequate resources for nurse’s professional development, inadequate innovation management skills as well as evidence inaccessibility (Sadeghi-Bazargani, Tabrizi&Azami-Aghdash, 2014).
