The success of an evidence-based practice project is determined by an appraisal of the outcomes that it generates. If there is no improvement in health, satisfaction, or cost effectiveness, then there is no need to change practice. The degree of improvement must be clinically meaningful and statistically significant in order to persuade other clinicians and administrators to adopt the practice. Thus, careful planning for data collection is key to the success of the project. This assignment requires each student to create a data collection plan that defines how success in the project will be defined. Before beginning this assignment, read the readings and watch the video presentations for Week 6 (posted in Blackboard).

The assignment has two parts, an overview of the data collection plan (500 words) and a table outlining the data collection elements (table form is posted in Week 6 of Blackboard). Part 1: Overview of data collection plan
Many people particularly Hispanic women who have type II diabetes fail to adhere to their prescribed medication regimen resulting in the worsening of their health conditions (Colo et al., 2011). Thus there is a need to develop ways aimed at improving medication adherence among Hispanic women who have type II diabetes. This study entails implementing a mobile web application dubbed Glucose Buddy for health education and medication reminder so as to increase medication adherence in Hispanic females with this chronic condition.
Data collection in this study will entail measuring 5 variables: adherence to medication regimen, employees’ satisfaction, patient treatment satisfaction, cost for each patient visit, and hospital costs saved. These variables would be measured two times: at baseline and three months after the project has been implemented. Adherence variable: to evaluate adherence to the prescribed diabetes medication, Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS) would be employed. This tool is basically a questionnaire that contains eight items; 7 questions which prompt a yes or no reply, and 1 question which the respondent answers on a five-point Likert scale (Morisky et al., 2008). Using this tool, the scores range from 0-8: scores of 6-7 suggest average adherence to medication whereas scores of 8 suggest high adherence. The adherence score is expected to improve as a result of using Glucose Buddy mobile app.
Patient satisfaction and employees’ satisfaction variables: the Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire for Medication (TSQM) version 1.4 will be employed to measure these two variables. This tool has 14 items which are categorized into 4 domains. These are Effectiveness 1-3; Side Effects 4-8; Convenience 9-11; and Global Satisfaction 12-14. Using this tool, scores of between 0 and 100 are given. Higher scores suggest greater satisfaction (Atkinson et al., 2005). Tiv et al. (2012) reported that when patients consider the medications they have been given as not being effective, not convenient or if they experience side effects as a result of using those drugs, then their chances of nonadherence are higher than when they consider the medications as useful, convenient and without side effects.
