Question: Please describe how you will apply Essential V & VI in your project activities and in your future practice as a DNP-prepared APRN.
Essential V: Health Care Policy for Advocacy in Health Care
The DNP program and project have prepared me to examine the impact of health policies on health outcomes. Essential V highlights the need to analyze, influence and educate policy makers to improve health care delivery and patient outcomes (AACN, 2006). I would engage more stakeholders to identify strategies that improve the quality of health care. Supporting the prevention of depression improves health outcome, and consensus building with stakeholders is crucial to influencing health care policy to implement depression care. Policy changes in health institutions and at the local and federal level can improve access to care for those with depression. In the future, I will apply Essential V to advocate for increased mental healthcare support services to address the problem of depression. It is only when policy makers prioritize depression that there is better care delivery targeting women with depression.
Essential VI: Interprofessional Collaboration for Improving Patient and Population Health Outcomes
Screening for depression is the first step to treating the mental disorder and if nurses are better trained in the prevention and management of depression will improve the health outcomes. I will embrace a collaborative approach when caring for patients with depression to manage the mental disorder. I am more aware about the importance of interprofessional collaborative care as different health practitioners have their own skills that facilitate holistic care interventions. I am also better prepared to use evidence supporting the benefits of cognitive behavioral therapy to reduce the severity of depression. As such, I would work with mental health practitioners to improve health outcomes.
