26-year-old Ms. A is a white woman who is found to be complaining about low levels of enthusiasm and energy and shortness of breath. From her case history, it looks like Ms. A is suffering from iron deficiency anemia. According to M. Pippard, anemia is a severe health issue that develops due to the lack of hemoglobin or red blood cells in the body. As one of the core constituents of the blood, hemoglobin consists of oxygen-transport metalloprotein, and in its absence, it may not be possible for body cells to get sufficient oxygen for their survival (Pippard, 2011). Thus, the death of cells is likely to occur within days or weeks, leading to several consequences. At 26, people tend to be energetic and can perform a variety of tasks on a daily basis, but in case of Ms. A, it looks like her body cells are not getting enough oxygen and nutrients, which is why she gets tired quickly.
All over the United States, more three million women, aging from 21 to 50, have been affected by anemia. The most common signs and symptoms of iron deficiency anemia are body weakness, extreme fatigue, chest pain, pale skin, dizziness, cold feet and hands, brittle nails, cravings, and inflammation. In 2010, E. Randy Eichner conducted a survey and published the results in an article titled Iron Deficiency Anemia. According to this study, a low level of iron and an insufficient quantity of oxygen in the body cause numerous health problems in women of all ages (Eichner, 2010).
