American Indians face key health disparities when compared to other Americans. This population group has been shown to have a life expectancy of at least five years less than other Americans (Skewes et al., 2020). In addition, there are higher rates of chronic illnesses such as diabetes mellitus type II among American Indians than among other American population groups. In addition, the population group has higher rates of suicide, higher likelihood of unintentional injuries, and low levels of access to healthcare (Skewes et al., 2020). These health disparities have majorly been attributed to poverty, historical injustices and cultural barriers.
Cultural humility refers to learning and understanding other people’s cultures.
