Acid-Base Physiology and Carbonic Acid Buffering System

Coursework Instructions:

**Please answer separately
1.Explain how acid-base physiology leads to the regulation of fluid balance and extra cellular pH.
2. What is the equation for the carbonic acid/bicarbonate buffering system? How do actions at the lungs and kidneys affect this equation and thus compensate for alterations in plasma pH levels?

Acid-base Physiology and Carbonic Acid Buffering System
Question One: Acid-base Physiology
PH regulation and acid-base homeostasis play a key role in normal body functioning. The body typically works at a specific range of pH, which, when altered, would jeopardize most activities. The main aim of acid-base regulation is to maintain a normal amount of CO2 in the blood. The kidney and lungs are the critical organs necessary for fluid regulation and pH adjustment by promoting ventilation depending on the blood condition. CO2 is a gaseous acid and increases the pH of the blood; therefore, the respiratory ventilation system regulates it. Abnormality in the CO2 leads to increased hydrogen ions and hydrogen carbonate, which are reduced by excreting the ions from the blood to increase the pH (Quigley, 2016). Chemoreceptor cells also assist in decreasing the PH by decreasing PCO2. Whenever there are instances of academia or metabolic acidosis, the ventilation increases to reduce the pH. T...
