Change makes it challenging to predict the near-term future with precision. Constant changes within the healthcare sector, such as technological advancement, create problems that must be addressed in the future. However, these changes reshape healthcare delivery while creating challenges and opportunities simultaneously. One of the unprecedented changes that triggered a paradigm shift in healthcare leadership thinking includes the shift from traditional reimbursement to costs bundling and pay-for-performance models (Manion, 2011). The pace of these changes within the healthcare delivery landscape creates an environment of rising ambiguity and uncertainty. The most effective and feasible solution that healthcare leaders might employ to solve this challenge is to nurture a culture of innovation and creativity across the healthcare delivery system (Healy, 2018a). This leads to a culture of continuous improvement where the entire organization recognizes the strives to improve performance and quality.
Workforce Issues
The aging Baby Boomer population is causing workforce issues in the healthcare sector. There is a workforce crisis due to the declining numbers of younger healthcare professionals entering the healthcare industry as a signification portion of Baby Boomers retire. High turnover costs are associated with higher-paid professionals and job vacancies, such as nurses, physical therapists, and pharmacists. Healthcare organizations must maintain quality and a stable workforce to guarantee better treatment outcomes and higher-quality services (Manion, 2011). One of the effective methods to solve this issue is to implement programs such as phased retirement to retain Baby Boomers in organizational positions longer and make the workplace conducive for older staff.
