Student and Family Survey

Coursework Instructions:

the students are first grade, so make sure your question is easily understood and user friendly.

Directions

  • Design a student And family survey. Your survey should ask around 8 – 15 questions that are appropriate for your audience. In addition to collecting general information about your students (e.g., age, class section, or grade), your survey should include culturally responsive-sustaining questions in these three areas:
    • Students’ interests and personalities
    • Students’ languaging practices – how they engage with language to socialize, express themselves, and make sense of the world (García, 2014, 2020)
    • Student’s strengths and academic goals
  • As you write and design your survey, please review the reflection questions below. You are not required to answer these questions in writing, but we will be discussing these questions in small groups in class.

Group Reflection Questions

  1. People: Who will be taking this survey (e.g., children or adults)? If your survey is meant for students, please specify their grade(s) or grade band(s) (e.g., 3rd grade, elementary, middle school, etc.). How will you ensure this survey is responsive to your audience?
  2. Product: What tool(s) will you use to create and distribute your survey (e.g., Google Forms, paper copies, etc.)? Will you use digital or analog tools? How will the respondents understand the purpose of your survey? Which of the survey questions will require an answer and which will be optional?
  3. Process: How will you conduct your survey? For example, will you administer your survey online, in person, or over the phone? How will you collect and organize the data you obtain from students and/or families? How will you keep their information safe and protect their privacy?
  4. Practice: How will you use the survey responses in your teaching practice this year? Please describe two examples of how you will apply what you learn about your students to create an inclusive, transformative, and/or engaging learning environment or lesson.

I am supposed to create a questionnaire for the students of Grade 1 that will help me align the lesson plan and pedagogical techniques to their personalities, language practices, goals, strengths, and weaknesses. In other words, I will be able to incorporate individualized attention into my teaching, enabling me to connect with each student through tailored lesson plans and strategies. The questionnaire extends into three parts, with the first part devoted to learning about the students' personalities, followed by questions about language practices, and then aiming to identify their strong and weak areas.
An important part of the tailored lesson plan is understanding the student's interests, hobbies, and personalities. It gives an idea about their preferences and offers valuable hints about how to approach them and grab and sustain their attention. For this purpose, my first question will be, "Which activities do you enjoy the most (such as playing with toys, watching cartoons, playing outside, etc.)? The students will be supposed to list any number of activities that interest them. It will help me understand which activities I can effectively incorporate into my lesson plan to boost its effectiveness.
It will be followed by the question about the favorite color, i.e., "What is your favorite color?" Even though the question is not intrinsically significant, it will help connect with the students. Also, the information about color will be helpful whenever, in the future, I engage the students in projects dealing with colors. Therefore, I would be able to effectively divide the students depending on their color preferences to maximize their interest in the project. For example, the students reporting blue as their favorite color will be able to pick and continue with blue color and so forth.
Next, I will encourage the students to share their favorite subject and tell me briefly why it is their favorite subject through this question: "What is your favorite subject and why?" I do not expect much from Grade 1 students to explain the reasons, as some students may subconsciously like a particular subject. However, merely the awareness about a student's favorite subject will help me use that subject as a motivational tool. Similarly, it will also guide me toward the career preferences of each student. Hence, I will also be able to better assist the parents in realistically setting their expectations for the students.
As for language preferences, it is important to learn about the frequency of languages used by students. For this purpose, the students will be required to answer these questions: "Which language do you speak at home?" and "Which language do you speak when you are with friends?" The knowledge about the most frequently spoken language is essential for the instructional material. It will also help me group the students concerning their language efficiency when pursuing group learning, as the students with the same language preferences are likely to better mingle and learn collaboratively.
Furthermore, the students will be asked, "Do you like listening to so...
