According to the Mississippi Act of 1989, each school in the state must offer a gifted education program for talented students between grades 2 and 6. The gifted Education Program (GEP) is a broad range of unique frameworks, procedures, and practices designed for gifted learners (Karnes & Shaunessy, 2004). This group of students demonstrate high potential and ability in specific areas compared to others. They can be artistically, intellectually, academically, or creatively gifted. This paper highlights various gifted programs offered in Mississippi.
Intellectually Gifted Program allows the admission of learners for a period of one year. It considers students who possess a high level of intelligence. However, before entry into the program, learners are taken through the identification process (Shumakova 2022). District personnel must be careful during this procedure to select the required learners. Under this program, a student can be referred by the administrator, counselor, parent, or teacher who has evidence that the learner is intellectually gifted. The student is further taken through an assessment criteria to determine their intelligence. They should possess a high range of giftedness, creativity, and leadership.
The academically Gifted Program admits learners with high academic degrees demonstrated during the identification process. The admission considers students between grades 9 and 12. They can be referred to the program by either a parent, their peers, themselves, teachers, or anyone who believes they are academically talented.
